About the Senior Design Award

Senior Design Award

The purpose of an award for seniors involved in the design project process is to encourage a high level of excitement toward their project and a high quality output. MESA would like to reward quality senior projects more, creating a healthy competition and boost the overall quality of the projects.

The projects will be judged on a point system as follows:

  • 20pts -- Innovation
    • Does this project add to the current status of the industry?
  • 20pts -- Benefit to the MicroE Department
    • Does this project aid the education of underclassmen?
    • Does this project add to the function of the SMFL?
  • 20pts -- Goal Achievement
    • How well did the student go from their proposal to their final product?
    • Did they encounter adversity? How did they react?
    • Did they make good engineering decisions? (DOE or floundering)
    • Did the student fulfill all the of department requirements for the senior project?
  • 15pts -- Presentation
    • Clarity
    • Delivery
    • Focus
    • NO Reading
    • Time
    • Appearance/Aesthetic
    • Equation placement (is it appropriate, overkill, not enough math?)
  • 10pts -- poster
    • Clarity
    • Conciseness
    • Appearance Aesthetic
  • 15pts -- Outstanding effort
    • What did the student dot o go above and beyond the requirements of the project?
      • Reactions to adversity
      • Time invested in project
      • Preparation (feasibility/foresight)

These criterions will add up to a total of 100 possible points. Once all of the presentations have been viewed and the students have submitted their [insert name for form here] the judges panel will get together to discuss and tally the points for each project. From here, if there is any confusion or close calls the judges panel will request an interview with the seniors to alleviate such problems.
